Langkawi is to be gazetted as the region's first UNESCO Geopark (geological park) in recognition of its fascinating geological formations. The 478km2 park will include mountainous peaks, limestone caves, suspended lakes, vertical sea walls as well as the fascinating plants covering these landforms.

Most of the outer islands are limestone and marble while the main island comprises ancient sandstone formations and granite intrusions.
